Error when trying to restore Windows XP Pro back up file

I made a back up of my files from my latop and kept the file on an external
hard drive.

After having my laptop stolen I am now trying to restore some of the files
and I am getting an error when trying to open the file on another Windows XP
Pro machine.

An error box telling me that "the backup file contains unrecognised data and
cannot be used".

I really need to get this information...and it's my last hope. Can anyone
help me with trying to get this file to work?

thanks in advance for any help

What program did you use to backup your files?

I've only seen that error when trying to restore a backup tape from a
Windows 9x machine. The backup in XP is not compatible with backups made
with earlier versions of Windows. It sounds like your backup was made with
XP Pro so this doesn't apply. There are programs that say they can fix this.
I have not personally tried them.

Have you tried copying the file from the external drive and then restoring
it from the copy?
