My mobo supports SATA and i hooked it up, but when I try to run my windows cd
in windows and click install, it freezes my pc and there is no way to get
out. I gave it a lot of time but nothing happened. I also tried to boot
from cd, without my old hard drive installed and on the blue screen where it
says "Loading Windows" it freezes. I have no idea what is wrong, anybody
have a clue?

Please explain why you are trying to "run your windows cd in windows".
Rather than what you did, what were you attempting to accomplish?

OK my mistake nevermind the part in windows. But when I try to boot from my
windows cd in order to install windows on a new drive it freezes when it gets
to "loading windows"

I think you may have to install SATA drivers prior to the Windows XP
installation. Correct me if I'm wrong--didn't SATA come out after XP? When
you're trying to do a clean install of XP there's a time at the very
beginning where it asks you if you need to install Chipset Drivers, etc. I
think this is the place you install the SATA drivers. With hope your
Computer Manufacturer gave you these drivers on a CD. Otherwise, maybe you
can download them from the manufacturers web site.

I have not tried this myself, but a month ago I got a virus that messed up
Internet Explorer. I tried and tried to fix the problem but only ended up
messing up my Registry beyond repair. My only choice became a clean install
of Windows XP. Like you, I couldn't get it go beyond the first few
minutes--then I'd get an error message about hardware incompatability and my
machine would blue screen. Fortunately, Dell provides a recovery partition
on new computers and I was able to bring my computer back to "Out of the Box"
condition using this option. I never did figure out why I couldn't get XP to
install the other way. I want to resolve this before Windows Vista is
released because I definately plan to upgrade and I will need to do a clean
install for this operating system.

So if anybody out there knows if this is what is causing the installation
failure, please let us know!

You probably have to install the drivers before windows will install. During
the initial installation there is an option to press f6 to install drivers.
The manufactuer should have driver ususally to be included from floppy
during installation.

Among other issues in setting up SATA, you have to install the drivers
from a floppy when it prompts for it with a message at the bottom of the
screen to press F6 to load drivers early in the XP installation process.

At the very first screen when running setup.exe, it says to hit F6 to
install SCSI drivers. Do it. Later you will be prompted for a floppy
containing the SATA drivers so Windows can actually find the "mass storage
device" (i.e., the hard drive).
