I get the message "error saving web page" whenever I try
to save a web page in Internet Explorer. The full error
message is "The web page could not be saved to the
selected location" with the title of "Error Saving Web
Page" in the blue bar.

When I go to File Manager, I see that every directory has
been set to "read only". I then go to uncheck the read
only option, but as soon as it has completed and I go to
have a look immediately at the "Attributes" in
the "Properties" option, it is still set as "read only".

Other applications (e.g. Word, Excel) seem to save OK,
but not Explorer.

The version of Windows is 5.1 (Build 2600) and Internet
Explorer 6.0.2800.1106

How can I fix this? Any ideas gratefully received.

Not sure why your having the prob, but it has nothing to do with the
read-only box, so you can eliminate that as a possibility.
Folders are not read-only. XP just marks all folders indeterminate by
default. It is a tri-state check box. Colored in is indeterminate, checked
is read-only, unchecked is normal. The folders are not read-only and should
work as normal. Just ignore the read-only box on folders. If you have a
piece of software that is having problems writing to a folder then try to
get an xp
compatible version of the program. Or post the exact problems you're having.
Most likely if it is a well written app then is it not the read-only check
box, more likely a permissions setting.

Here is some info on it:

XP does this by design. In XP the read only attribute
is only used by explorer to see if the folder is a special or a system
folder. Read up on it:
