I am upgrading my desktop computer from Windows 98 First Edition to Windows
XP. I passed the product key part, and it said it was copying installation
files. An error message popped up on the screen that says: A required .DLL,
VRMHCCP_EN .DLL was not found. I want to know how I can fix this
problem and I can finish my installation. It won't let me finish my
installation. What can I do?

Please give some information about your computer. Brand, cpu, memory, hard
drive, etc. Also disconnect any external devices except keyboard, mouse,
and monitor. Remove any internal cards that you have added since buying the
computer that are not essential to running the computer. XP will easily
find and configure them when you connect them after the installation.

I have a HP. CPU is AMD Duron 1.3 GHz, 40 GB HD, 256MD RAM. I got nothing
hooked up except the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Does the speakers count?
The internal card is Ethernet Card that is hooked up to the Cable Modem. Any
Help?

Insert the xp cd while Win98 is running. When the xp splash appears click
on Other Tasks and then choose the Upgrade Advisor. Let the UA create a
list of things to do before starting the upgrade to XP. When you have
resolved all of the issues and know what you need to update after the
upgrade is finished, then turn off your antivirus program and click on
Install and upgrade Win98 that way. You should not be booting with the XP
cd unless you plan to do a clean install (which would wipe out your data
files and programs). In theory you can upgrade by booting from the cd and
making certain choices, but it is not working out.

there is no other task to click on nor is there an Upgrade Advisor.

Then you must not be seeing the splash screen for Windows XP. Insert XP
from your Windows 98 desktop. Don't boot with it. The top item is Install,
and I believe the third is Perform Other Tasks, or just Other Tasks. When
you select that you should see another set of choices, one of which allows
you to analyze the computer for potential problems before upgrading. You
can also download the Upgrade Advisor from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx but it is the
same program.

It told me that the old printer and scanner won't work on XP and the software
for our digital camera won't work. The software that needs updated after XP
installed was microsoft works. If I can do that after XP is installed then
why isn't it finishing installing. I got to the point where my computer
restarted and i asked if i wanted to choose either Microsoft XP setup or
cancel setup and I chose setup. It took me to a screen where a error popped
up that said: A fatal error has been ecountered that prevents setup from
continuing. One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could
not be installed. Manifest Parse Error: An invalid character was found in

That is apparently a problem with the cd itself. If you have another copy
of xp (has to be the same edition), you can install from it but with the
product key on the one you have been using or change the product key at
activation. Otherwise it appears the xp cd needs to be replaced according
to the instrutions found at:

You will have to ask Microsoft questions about how much, how long, etc.
Maybe it won't even cost you shipping. Maybe they send it out by FedEx. I
don't know.

As for the computer, shut it down. When the new cd arrives get online and
tell us how things stand and we will pick it up with you at that point. For
now, call Microsoft.
