I do have a problem opening one workbook which is created
under xlxp desktop with a office 2k laptop. Did install
SR3 but same problem.
Other workbooks do not have any problems.
error message is "Exel has generated error and will be
closed by Windows. Errorlog is being created.

Any idea how to recover this error ?

Have you checked the error log to see what exactly is happening?
Have you deleted all files in your c:\temp c:\winnt\temp and c:\doc&
settings\user\local settings\temp directories

Have you reinstalled or tried repairing Excel?
Are there any macros in this workbook? What is different in this workbook from
other workbooks? Large/macros/links?

Try cleaning up your windows temp folder.

And if that didn't help, try searching for your *.xlb file. It's where excel
stores your customized toolbars. Sometimes these get corrupted and cause excel
problems.

Windows Start button|Find|files
check out the size of that file. If it's huge, try renaming it (*.xlbOLD). If
that helps, recreate your toolbar file and dump that old one. If it doesn't
help, you could just rename it back to *.xlb.

And Chip Pearson has some notes to help diagnose this kind of problem at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

And if none of this works (and it's only one workbook that has trouble), then
maybe the workbook is corrupted.

You might be able to recover it by using another program--both xl2002 and
OpenOffice have better reputations for opening files that earlier versions of
excel couldn't.

(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

If the file is really important, there are commercial recovery services. I've
never used it, but you might want to check into:
