In Windows XP Pro, after the Welcome screen, upon the opening of the Desktop screen, the system becomes extremely slow completing start-up. Eventually an Error dialog box appears: "Service program is not active." After the system is fully open, there are no apparent problems with the system.
I cannot utilize System Restore as all restore points were lost.
I believe the cause of the problem relates to upgrading from Windows Media Player v.9 to v.10. I experienced other start-up problems initially but they went away after attempting reinstallation of WMP v.9 then reinstalling WMP v.10.
I cannot find any reference to this error message on the Microsoft web site, including a KB search.
Short of a suggestion to reload Windows, I would appreciate any information as to how to correct this problem.
