I have a Dell 8200 running WinXP Home with Powerpoint 2000. I can't record
any Narrations. When I go to insert a Narration, then try to record or even
set microphone level, it says it is not recieving anything from the device.
Tells me to go to the control panel, adjust the settings, and come back.
Well, I've done that, over and over, and all is in order: I can record in
other applications, including sound recorder, just fine. However, I still
cannot record a narration in Powerpoint. I updated to all the latest
service packs. Nothing helps. It would seem that the problem relates to
how Powerpoint finds the recording device. Please help!
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

For reasons I've never quite figured out I've seen this happen with Dell
machines that have other sound input devices like a voice modem. Going into
the Device Manager and disabling the device seems to take care of the
problem.

Disabling which device? I don't even think I have a voice modem in it, but
I'll check. Thanks,
Jim

Go to device manager and look at "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers". I'm
betting you'll see devices other than your sound card listed.

I'm sure you're right. I'll look and try to disable something. I've
noticed that this section in device manager confuses me as there are a
zillion devices listed, and I don't always know which ones are being used
and which ones aren't. Thanks,
Jim
