I am a writer, and in the course of doing just that in my word processor,
offline I might add, I will be typing away having caught up with my muse,
and, in the middle of things, that message comes up which states that it has
to close and bang, my work is gone, forever. is there a way to make it auto
save every few minutes so the loss is not as devastating as it was today
[2000 words gone in the blink of an eye and a deadline looming]

The answer depends on what the "it" is that you are asking about. My
word processor is WordPerfect, and yes, WordPerfect gives you that
option and lets you choose how long the "every few minutes" is.

Whether Microsoft Word, or other word processors, have a similar
option, I don't know. However questions like this are best asked, not
in a Windows XP newsgroup, but in a newsgroup devoted to whatever
word processor you use--that's where the expert sin that product hang
out.

I thought that windows xp help and support might be the right place, as I am
using windows xp and the word processor that comes loaded in it. and since I
needed help and support, well, you can follow my train of thought I would
think.
perhaps its back to the typwriter for me though, as I have be prowling the
groups and posts and apparently this is not something I can have anymore as I
did in previous pc incarnations. [ahh for the ole doss shell days] anyway,

You don't understand. The operating system allow the computer to run
programs. One of the thousands of programs that it enables is a
wordprocessor. Just because it came with Windows XP does not mean that it
is a part of Windows. It could be Microsoft Word, Wordperfect, Workdpad,
Notepad,........ Respond back with the name of the program that you are
using for wordprocessing and also the error message

I can follow your train of thought, but let me point out that *no*
word processor comes with Windows XP (unless you consider Notepad and
WordPad to be word processors--they are really just glorified text
editors).

You may have a word processor that was sold you along with your
computer, but it's not part of Windows; it was just bundled with the
computer by the OEM who sold it to you. No word processor, or any
other significant application software, has ever come with any version
of Windows.

And whatever word processor you may have, we can't tell what it is
wthout your telling us. And without knowing what it is, we can't tell
you whether you can do what you want or how.

And "Help and Support"? Microsoft did a terrible job of choosing that
name. This newsgroup was originally set up to be for assistance with
the Windows XP Help and Support *feature*, not for general help and
support. But the name has been so generally misunderstood over the
years that's now effectively just another WindowsXP.general newsgroup.

give you a hard time, but rather to try to point you someplace where
you can get the help you need.
