Every time I try to open a url from an email message, I get an error message
telling me that window can not open it. But if I click off the error message
and try to open the url again, it will open. Any body know why?? Thanks

Actually the error message states that "Windows can not find the URL."
thanks,

Make sure your Internet Explorer (IE) has all its defaults.
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Internet
Explorer". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

I tried what you said and it is still doing it. When I click on a URL in an
email message, the computer dings and puts up the message that the url
address can't be found and to make sure I typed in the url correctly. It
doesn't make sense!
thanks,

What happens if you try holding either the Shift or Ctrl keys while clicking
the link?

Perhaps one of your IE add-ons is blocking things.
Close IE, then click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools,
select "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)". Try that URL link in the
email message again.

If no improvement, did it say that IE had all its defaults when you
went to Default Programs? Also, which third party security programs
are you running?

Thank you Gary,
I went in and turned off all the add-ons that had been added to IE recently
and that solved the problem. It also solved another problem with outgoing
emails not being sent. Thank you again.

You're very welcome. Thanks for reporting back.
You can go into IE's settings and disable Add-ons individually,
one at a time, in order to discover which one is causing the problem.
