In order of increasing complexity:
1. If you can start your computer in Safe Mode, run the Disk Error Checking
application typically found in Start > All Programs > Accessories > System
Tools. That will try to repair any logical errors your hard disk may have.
(A logical error has to do with the organization of files and folders.)
If you are unable to start in Safe Mode, you can accomplish the same thing
from the Recovery Console, using the chkdsk /f command:

2. Open the computer case and re-seat the IDE cables. Over time they can
sometimes work themselves loose. Pesky little guys.
3. Go to the web site of your hard disk manufacturer and run their disk
diagnostic routines. That will tell you if you have a problem with your hard
disk.
4. See this article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Configuration Problem"
