This just started happening today - all office programs were working fine
yesterday and I can't remember any significant (or insignificant) problems.
When I tried to open a word document I got the above error. Thought maybe my
doc was corrupted but trying other documents all result in the same error.
Looking into other office programs I found "Unable to read file" on all Excel
spreadsheets I tried to open and in PowerPoint I get "Powerpoint can't read
<file path and name>. Situation desperate - any help gratefully appreciated.
I am running Windows XP Home edition and Microsoft Office XP Professional.
I also tried rebooting with no effect.

Lura,

Can you open Windows Explorer and click on the file to get
it to open? If not, I suggest two courses of action:
1. Download, install, update and scan with Ad-aware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com
2. Choose Detect and Repair from the Help drop down menu.

If you are using Norton AntiVirus, disable its Office Plug-in.

Chuck~
No, I did try that earlier and any method/location of opening fails with the
same error. I do have Ad-Aware and use it regularly. On your advice I ran
it again with no change in the application problems. Thank you for trying to
help!

This did not work - I tried both downloading updates via LiveUpdate and
disabling. However, since I got two replies mentioning problems with
Microsoft office applications and Norton, in desperation I completely
uninstalled Norton. Whalla! All my office programs are again working
perfectly with the added bonus that my system is running faster and smoother.
Thanks to you and all who responded for steering me in the right direction
to come up with a solution!

Was not sure how to post the answer - thought I would put it up front so
anyone interested can get to it without reading all - My solution was to
remove Norton Antivirus completely. Running LiveUpdate did not help but
removing the program returned everything in my system to normal (even better)
working order. It may have something to do with the version of Norton I was
running (2002). Thanks for all the suggestions - really appreciate your help.
