Error message on startup

My HP Pavilion ZE1230 laptop, 100megehertz bus clock, 1.3 gigahertz AMD
Athlon, 60 gig HD, 256 RAM, HD is 50% free. Lately upon bootup I've been
getting a brief blue screen about some error message but it continues to
boot into Windows XP. After the desktop loads a dialogue box requests
sending an error report to MS. In Event Viewer I've found this error for the
system.

Where do I start to figure this out?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code
properly. Right click on the My Computer icon on the
Desktop and select Properties, Advanced, StartUp and
Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until
you have resolved the problem. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager?
Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and
select Properties. Hardware, Device Manager. If yes what
is the Device Error code?

How often does the error occur on booting and how often
is the boot trouble free? Does it ever occur if you boot in
Safe mode?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK.
What drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which
are not checked.

Will disable automatic restart to begin. Thanks.
No problems in Device Manager.
I'd say it's about 50/50 lately on startup. Sometimes no problem other
times it wants to send the error report to MS although the error reports
vary in what they contain according to the code.
Haven't tried to see if it happens during safe mode.

The sigverif.exe shows only 1 unsigned:
NTVDM.dll in C\Windows\system32 version 5.1.2600.1560

It appears the rest ( about 364 ) are signed.

Can you please check the file name. NTVDM.dll or ntvdm.exe?

Please post copies of Error Reports.
