i just got a call from my panicked 15 year old daughter
that the computer (dell desk top with XP Home) stops
booting up after the Dell page and displays the above
error message (followed by "replace and strike any key
when ready.") she checked the disc drives and has tried to
re-boot but gets the same message. any ideas?

That error usually means that someone has left a floppy
disk in the disk drive and has attempted to start up the
computer with it still in there. Have her look at that
drive to make sure there is nothing inside of it.

I trust that "checked the disc drives" means she removed
all discs from all the drives including CD's and 3.5
discs. Have her check again; all dives. Assumming they
are really clear, put a disc in each one and then remove
it. Do this for all drives. If still doing it carefully
open the door to the drive and look for foreign material
that is stuck in the drive. Do not force anything.
