Error Message - Needs to Close

I have been getting an error message:
'program' has encountered a problem and needs to close: but it happens on
many programs - SONIC, IE, Incredimail and so on. When I drill down to the
error file it always references a file which has the name 'aaaa_appcompat'
where aaaa varies each time. Does this mean that somehow I've changed Windows
such that it is now incompatible with all my programs?

Any idea how to correct. I thought about using my Windows Repair CD but now
that SP2 is installed that's now out of date.

The name of the file has all the hallmarks of malware. Scanned
the computer lately for viruses, adware, spyware, trojans, etc.?
Make sure that the virus definitions are current. And for the
malware, there is Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, etc. An external
scan, such as Housecall from Trend Micro, may also be helpful at
detecting these problems.

To resolve this problem with Internet explorer, use one of the following
methods.

STEP1. Remove Smart Tags Support for Internet Explorer

1) Close all open Internet Explorer windows.
2) In Control Panel, start the Add or Remove Programs tool (or the
Add/Remove Programs tool).
3) Click Smart tags support for Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then click
Change/Remove (or click Add/Remove).

Disable Smart Tags in Internet Explorer

1) Start Internet Explorer.
2) On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3) On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Enable smart tags check box.
4) Click OK, and then restart Internet Explorer.

STEP 2: Please follow the steps provided below to disable error reporting:

1. Click start and right click My Computer.
2. Click properties.
3. Select the "Advanced" tab at the top.
4. Click the "Error Reporting" button.

You will find Error Reporting box open up.

5. Click to select "Disable error reporting" radio button and select the
check box "But notify when the error occur" check box.
6. Click Okay button and click apply and ok for the next window as well.

This should take care of the error reporting.

Yes. I agree with GHalleck. You could use anti spy program and some anti
virus programs as well to scan the PC.

I suggest you to use either Microsoft Anti spyware or ad aware to scan the
PC for spy software. Please use any one. Not both of them.

Web link to download Microsoft Anti spy software:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

Web link to download the ad aware:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE...045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

NOTE: You may copy and paste the entire link in the address bar of the
Internet explorer and check if clicking on them does not open the correct web
page.

I will provide you the steps for you to scan with the Trend Micro:

1. Open www.trendmicro.com
2. Click "Free Virus scan" under the "Popular Resources".
3. Click " Scan Now. It's Free! " under "Scan now".
4. CLick on the red magnifying glass icon with "Start Free Scan Now" in it.
5. Click on complete scan.
6. Follow the instructions and scan the PC.

This should take care of the Issue.

Thanks Vicki,
However Smart Tags isn't in my list of programs that can be removed. Neither
is there an entry in the Advanced List on IE Options which can either be
ticked, or unticked.

I'm trying Ghallecks suggestion of using Housecall but guess what it fails
before it completes. Still, I'll keep trying

Are you doing it in Safe Mode with Networking? Do it with Panda's online
scan as well as McAfee's S.T.I.N.G.E.R.

Hi,

It is bad that you did not find the smart tags. However, Please disable the
error reporting. That is step 2.

You may contact HP tech support if you have a HP or a Compaq PC. You may try
via chat as they have a free chat support. They work 24 Hrs a day and will be
able to assist you.

I will let you know if I come across. Incidentally, have you tried
reinstalling the Internet explorer? Please try this only if the house call
does not help you.

steps:
1. Click Start, Run
2. Type C:\Windows\inf
3. In the opened folder, find and select IE file.
4. Right-click and select Install option
5. If you are prompted for Windows XP CD, Insert the CD.
6. After the file copy process, please restart the system.

I'm unable to run any scans because e.g. Housecall, which runs from the
internet, fails with the same message i.e. 'has encountered an error and has
to close'. Also S T I N G E R fails the same way. I'll have problems
re-installing Windows as it came with the machine and has been extensively
patched, including SP2, since then.
