I just got an automatic update. I clicked to install the updates. Laptop was
shut down and then re-started. Now get the following error message:

The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the
dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll.

Windows boots as far as the background but no icons appear.

What should I do to fix this?
Thank you,
Bob

Try booting to safe mode (F8 on boot) and a system restore to before
the update.

Or download from here, rename the current one to shlwapi.old, and
replace it with the downloaded one.

I'd go for the system restore first.

Also you could try sfc /scannow from a command line.
