Hi,

I keep getting the following error message, after which I
cannot access anything on the web or my network:

"Common Client Network Proxy Service has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience."

After the error message, the only way to get the
network / 'net back is to restart.

The problem is not restricted to one website or network
location, it appears random, and happens at any time.

I'm on NTL broadband through a cable modem, and running a
4 port belkin (inc. wireless) 54g router.

MS website as helpful as ever (?) so I thought I'd try on
here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Carl.

I had the same problems but not random. Everytime with one specific website.
Turning of firewall (norton) did the trick.
Strange is'nt it.

That it is because this "Common Client Network Proxy Service" comes from
Symantec - so it is not Microsoft's fault. It is located in the file
ccProxy.exe.
The problem is extremely annoying, as even a restart will not always help.
The new Symantec Internet Security 2004 not only causes that error message
the original poster has described, it even more often just corrupts my
network connection, for example when I try to login into a webmail
interface. Plus, it keeps making Outlook Express crash - with no way to
uninstall only the spam checker, which is the reason for that.
When the internet connection is corrupted, certain websites still work, but
most are blocked. Kazaa still works. Usenet and Mail does not. For me, too,
disabling the Symantec firewall works. I recommend sticking to the built-in
Windows firewall and not spend your money on Internet Security 2004.

I was getting the same error message when connecting to Juno from an
XP box. Here is the work around I found:

The problem is that Norton installs ccProxy, as a Windows "service"
between your web browser and the internet. Sometimes ccProxy craps
out and once that happens the browser can't get to the net. Also,
once it happens ccProxy won't restart until you reboot.

You can make ccProxy automatically restart by doing the following from
an administrator account. Click this way:

->Start
->Settings
->Control Panel
->Adminstrator Tools
->Component Services
->Services

Find "Common Client Network Proxy Service" or something similar in the
list.
Double click on it.
Click on the Recovery tab.
Next to "First Failure" select "Restart the service"
Click Apply and OK.
Reboot.

Now ccProxy will restart immediately after it fails. This should
allow you to continue non-stop with your web browsing.

If you have a lot of ccProxy failures you might try setting "Second
Failure" and so-on.

Good luck.

Oops. I made a few mistakes in the directions. Here is a corrected
version. It should also work for Win2k.
Note: This will allow you to continue browsing other pages. It may
not enable you to view the page that causes the problem.

Click this way:

->Start
->Settings
->Control Panel
->Performance and Maintenance
->Administrative Tools
->Component Services
->Services

Find and double click "Symantec Network Proxy".
Click on Recovery tab.
Select "Restart the Service" for First, Second, and Subsequent
failures.
