I got the error message "Virtual Memory Too Low" and my computer
slowed way down. I tried increasing the paging file but this did not
doing anything. My computer repair place is saying I have a virus.
Before I have it repaired at $100+ does anyone think it could be
anything that I could fix? I now can not get online with that
computer.

Hi,

If you think it is a virus, download stinger from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and run on the system while in Safe mode
(not in normal mode).

Do you have Intel Application Accelerator installed? If so, you need to
uninstall it and install the latest version. The older ones are incompatible
with WinXP and can cause this error message as well.

If not, then try this: Go to System properties/advanced/performance
settings/advanced tab/virtual memory change and disable the swap file.
Reboot. Delete all instances of pagefile.sys from all drives should any
exist, then reverse the original steps and reenable the swap file. Reboot
once more to finish. See if this helps,

Thank you for your prompt reply.
The computer repair shop showed up before I had chance to do the
above. They said I have a new virus that doesn't have a signature (or
something) and virus software couldn't have protected my computer. Is
this true? Does this mean I could be vulnerable at anytime in the
future? These virus could really wreak havoc on society. The computer
place says it should take about 1 to 2 hours to fix. Does this sound
reasonable?

Hi,

A new virus without a signature is always a possibility, but there is always
a possibility they were just blowing smoke because they didn't know what was
really wrong. If you were infected by a new unknown, chances are hundreds of
thousands of others would be as well, and it would be in the news by now. 1
to 2 hours to fix is not unreasonable irregardless.
