When I try to send mail, I get the above error message, either telling me
that the connection to the server was not made or that it was interrupted.
I've checked that my SMTP is on but I did notice that the ports required are
110 and 25. Any assistance about how I check that these are the ports
available on my desktop would be gratefully received. I can receive some
mail, but the same error message appears when I click Send and Receive,
telling me that not all of it is coming through.
I'm going nuts trying to figure out the problem here, so I'm relying on you
guys out there to help me out! Thanx, Jan

That error is usually caused by failure to authenticate to the outgoing
server. It can also be caused by scanning your incoming and outgoing mail
with an antivirus program.

Those posts aren't available on your desktop, they're the ports on the mail
server to which you connect. You can test to see if the server is
responding properly by opening a command line window and entering:

telnet yourpopserver 110

and

telnet yoursmtpserver 25

If you get responses from the servers, you know they're listening on those
ports. Enter

quit

in response to the servers' prompts to get back to the command line.

Thanx Brian, your reply was really helpful. My ports were not connecting so
I have to try and figure out how to connect them - wish me luck!

Sounds like the support people of your ISP should be your next call.
