Check out my post for Error 0x800C0005 on 9-14-2003 at
12:28 pm and the reply from Lucy.
I was getting the 0x800A138F error page (a general catch-
all error message it seems), but checking the
windowsupdate.log file showed that the real error was
0x800C005. The log file showed me exactly where Windows
Update bombed, and what it was trying to do at the time.
Lucy pointed me toward the Host file for solution. Windows
Update was trying to access a site (akamai.net) using a
static address in the Host file. She indicated that my
Host file probably was changed when I downloaded a program
related to spyware blocking. I commented out the static
address line in the Host file, which allowed Windows
Update to run properly.
Maybe you have the same problem?
