I have a copy of an old MDB file that I need to modify. The file format is
Access97 and I'm running 2002 (XP). When I try and open the file I get an
erro:

" The current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable this
database"

I receiveds the DB on CD, but have copies it to my hard drive. I have an
MDE version that runs OK, and there is no password required. ANy ideas how I
might open this?

There is a clue here in your question.

If you have copied the file from the CD and not removed the 'Read only'
status that will have been applied automatically then Access may not be able
to convert the file.

Locate the .mdb file in Windows Explorer, right click it, and select
'Properties', one of the attributes at the bottom will be 'Read only', make
sure this box is un-checked.

This is a common mistake when people move files from a CD to their hard drive.

Neil,

Many thanks for the swift reply, but the error is still occuring.

The full text of the error message is:

The current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable this
database.

To convert or enable a database, ensure the following:
*You must join the workgroup that defines the user accounts used ot access
the database
*Your user account must have the Open/Run and Open Exclusive permissions
forthe database object.
*Your user account must have the Modify Design or Administer permissions for
all tables in the database, or it must be the owner of all tables in the
database
*Your user account must have Read Design permission for all objects in the
database
*Request that other users close the database

I have the only copy in existence unfortunately, and have no documentation
to tell me anything about workgroup names, permissions settings or such.
This an area of Access that I'm weak on/know nothing about! Thanks again in
advance for any help!
