can someone tell me if the error log files can be deleted, and if so where
are they stored?
thank you.

Hi digigal,

Yes, they can be rebuilt, if corrupt, by deletion.
Go to Control Panel>AdministrativeTools>Services>disable Event log
Reboot
Delete sysevent.evt, secevent.evt, & appevent.evt (use search *.evt)
Go back and set "Event log" to automatice
Reboot

You mind me asking what you have done recently that could have caused this? Have you completed
a Windows Update, or installed any hotpatches? Have you had an infection possibly? Do you run
AVP and firewall? If not, I suggest you surf to www.spychecker.com and pick up AVG, zone
Alarm, Ad-aware, and SpyBot-S&D. They will help you stay safe.

Hi Don, thanks for your info, I did have that nasty blaster and I think I've
recovered from it, there were just a ton of error log files, not that they
were bothering me, I just wanted to clear them and I did some digging and
found that this command run/eventvwr.msc will clear all log files, not sure
if it deletes them, but it cleared them for me. thanks again.

I may have misunderstood what you were trying to accomplish.
To simply clear the Event log screens is very easy. I do this regularly.

While in Event viewer looking at the three Event viewer files, right mouse any one of them and
choose "Clear all events" and answer "No" to the following prompt.

You can also export a list in a tab(or comma) delimited format saved in a .txt file of any one
of these viewers (the right mouse contextual menu shows this when the particular viewer is
open). This is handy to send to someone, who is good at recognizing particular types of
problems. You also can "save as" to an .evt file so that another party can actually see the
explanation of each event.

Sorry about misunderstanding, and if the above isn't clear, we'll try to assist more.

While you are in doing some of this, suggest you look at the "properties" for each Event
viewer to see that they can be customized to change from default parameters (but I would only
adjust one at a time until you are familiar, and keep up with default)

No, there was no misunderstanding, I think you were on the right track in
answering my questions. I was working on a Dell system looking through their
help index and came up with a list of error logs dating back from when the
computer was first purchased (I'm cleaning it out) and I just wanted to
clear everything. Thanks.
