Inexplicably, XP Professional froze when I asked Photoshop to save a file. Now, I get this: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dl
Please re-install a copy of the above file

When I try to re-install from the XP CD, I get some frightening message about windows could not be started so as to not damage the computer, and the following cryptic message
STOP: 0x0000007B (oxf78D66C, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, ox00000000

Queston 1: How can I repair XP and get my almost new home-brewed 'puter functional
Question 2: This is the second time this has occurred. The first time, after the freeze, I found the boot sequence had changed, and when I got it reconfigured, all was OK. The boot sequence was messed this time, but reordering the boot sequence hasn't solved my problem. What do I need to do to preclude these little excursions

Thanks. If you can help, I'll be forever indebted

Lorenzo

I have had almost the same thing happen to me, except my
warning spoke of a corrupt or missing WIN32K.SYS file. I
too got the XP blue screen of death, warning of possible
computer damage. To get back on line, I booted to the
safe mode and then did a restore back to when it worked
ok. Then I reloaded XP completely. This solved most of
the problems, I still have a garbled text problem so
after a long cold shutdown, I have to do another restore
(almost every morning). I have no idea what is going on,
but this is how I got up and running again. I hope
someone else has more info.

Oh, Angels of Mercy, please help me in my moment of travail.

I thought I had tried just about everything I could:

1. Attempted to access Recovery Console: kept getting directions to insert a disc I didn't have
2. Downloaded the XP Startup diskettes: kept getting an error message at Disc 3: "File \halaacpi.dll could not be loaded. The error is 7."
3. Decided to bite the bullet and format C: drive.

That's when all hell broke loose: Now, when I try to boot from the XP CD, I get the "press any key to start..." followed immediately with an ASCII string and the computer freezes. Same thing with 95 & 98.

I did manage to get Norton Disk Doctor to check the C: drive; it appears OK. Any ideas?

You can't live with it; you can't live without it. After more fiddling, loading various version of windows and even DOS and reformatting several times, all of a sudden when I tried, yet once again, tp load XP, the damn thing took off and now I am the happy owner/operator of a functional XP 'puter. The only thing I tried differently, and learned from one of the sites my Angels of Mercy suggested, was to IMMEDIATELY press any key when the "press any key to load XP" (or whatever it is) message appears. Don't know if that made the difference, but something happened. ??

Maybe I learned something in this little episode about keeping XP functional. I did learn the XP is not as forgiving as I was led to believe. You gotta love Microsoft

Thanks again for your help.
