Hi Guys

When I try to open IE I get a message that says it has encountered a problem and needs to close, the follow-p message is that "iexplorer has caused an error in KERNAL32.DLL. I've run tune up utilities, virus checks, cleared buffers, etc. No improvement

I tried to reinstall, and downloaded the ie6setup file, but when I try to run it I get a message that says "setup cannot continue because fiels are mission from the installation directory. Please run setup again and choose resume setup" which of course is exactly what I did from the beginning

Any thoughts?

Jim,
First, if it's KERNAL32, it's a virus. See:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.doly.html
If it's KERNEL32, read on...

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to open.

Then...
Run CWShredder from http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html It's been
the most helpful with this type of problem. CWShredder is only about 125 KB
so it could be downloaded from another machine onto a floppy disk if
necessary.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

Also...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, security,
anti-virus, etc. Also... notorious for causing problems- Gator, Kazaa and
some others.

There are other possibilities for KERNEL32 errors:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#kernel32
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/erriexpl.htm#ERRKERNEL32.DLL
http://aumha.org/win4/a/kernel32.php

Regards,
Don
