Hi

Have you got any diagnostic software for your hard disk(s) to check their
integrity? How old are the drives?

Have you seen any errors pertaining to S.M.A.R.T.?

will do

one thing - its my download pc so its very busy

maybe the i/o was too much ?

think i'll leavie it on a few hours doing nothing
and see what happens

any ideas welcome

Hard drives are the Slowest part of a PC. You might want to use
Perfmon.Msc & include Disk sub-system counters to analyze your
mass storage performance.
Click Start, Run (Type) Perfmon.Msc
Right Click an empty area of the Data pane (Right) and from the
context menu choose "Add Counters". In the Performance Object
window - toggle to Physical Disk and then add appropriate counters
for the drive(s).

machine left idle for 5 hrs

just checked

controller error - event id 11

also - parity errors - not many but 1 is enough !

think XP is trying to tell me to get a new board ?

while i still have time . . .

2 samsungs - less than 6 months old

pass all the samsung tests

and speedfans smart thing says theyre ok

thing is message (see below posts) are for one channel only
but i'm thinking the board is on the way out

So save money & improve performance Id invest in a SATA
PCI controller and a IDE->SATA Adapter for the drive(s).
Can probably pick up both for ~$60-70, unless you're looking
to upgrade the motherboard.

Theyre both sata drives anyway

oh , i get you - new pci card as controller but old board

its a 478 job so theyre not that expensive anyway anymore
but point taken

think i'll new board it and put it down to experience

Check your HDD manufacturer's site for a free downloadable testing program.
[Model # of drive is in System Information>Components>Disks. You can enter
the model # in a search pane to get the manufacturer if you don't know it.]
When my Maxtor HDD caused this code, I downloaded/ran Maxtor's disk-specific
check-out program.
It found and fixed the bad sector on the drive (sector D). ChkDsk missed it.
Unfortunately, the performance degraded rapidly from that point, and I
replaced the drive.

2nd Part- READ Carefully, Maxtor's tests are incrementally
intrusive/destructive to data on the disk.(1st is light, 2nd tougher, 3rd
tougher still, 4th causes data loss.)They tell exactly what you are risking.
Your manuf. may vary.
