error and shut down on xp

an error occures when I run my internet connection on my
adsl modem.
It run immidiately but after 1 or 2 minutes appears a
windows some like that:
error. nt/authority/system
shuting down by remote procedural call
please help me

wouldn't applying any critical updates from windows update take care of it?

The updates are preventative.
You also need to remove Blaster.
The time to apply the updates is before they seem needed.
You should install ALL Critical Updates soon after they are released.
