Paul

Hi All.

I've installed WXP Home over W98SE. When I try to
uninstall, or reinstall the Palm Desktop 4.1 software I
get this message:

Error 1606.Could not access network
location "::\Documents and Settings\Francine
Mendoza\SendTo"

Palm support says this is a MS problem.

KB315352 talks about a similar symptom, with Common
Administrative Tools. I don't have Common Administrative
tools in the registry location the KB talks about.

The reason I'm trying to reinstall the Palm software is
because after upgrading to WXP I can't get my Palm 515m
to talk to my desktop.

One last thing, I have NAV 9.05.15. I've tried
uninstalling/reinstalling the Palm software with the NAV
running or closed, but now difference. Error 1606 still
shows up.

Thank you for looking at my posting.

Paul, here are a couple of things to look at:

1. According to the knowledge base article it said that unistalling NAV
might do the trick too. Have you tried that?

2. You say those reg keys are not present in your registry. Are you
sure? If not you can try creating those registry keys that the
knowledge base article mentions. Also look at this link which covers
the same info but also mentions a second registry key to check:

http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBJ/tip4800/rh4819.htm

3. Lastly look through this thread. There are alot of postings about
this problem here and some solutions that have worked for some folks:

Good luck

Keylly, This path (\Documents and Settings\Francine
Mendoza\SendTo) does exist in my desktop machine.
However, I can't answer whether this path is a correct
path for the installer. I don't know what the installer
is up to.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for verifiying.

In that profile when you go to Start/Run and type in SendTo, does it open
the proper folder? And beings you say that you can navigate to the folder,
means it isn't hidden.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and verify that SendTo is listed properly under
these two keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

Other than the above: Suggestions and Checkpoints:

1. Does the profile have Admin Status?
2. Run the Windows Cleanup Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
3. Try manually adding the needed files per the article. And the one's
listed below.
4. Delete the CLSID via the registry, etc. for the install.
5. Keep us posted and good luck!

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Favorites
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Templates

Kelly and Hilary Karp,
I got my Palm connection to my WXP PC back up and running
last night. What got it working was Kelly's suggestion to
run the Installer Cleanup utility from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;290301. After I ran this utility I was able to remove
and then reinstall the Palm Desktop 4.1 software, with no
sign or breadth of Error 1606. Best of all- with the
reinstallation of the Palm Desktop 4.1 now my Palm 515m is
again on speaking terms with my PC.
Thank you Kelly and Hilary for replying to my posting with
your helpful suggestions. You folks are the greatest!
Paul.
