Err Msg: "Cannot Open the Volume for Direct Access" When You Start

Microsoft database gives a solution to this error but not
for XP Home. Have wrestled with this problem for 5 hours.
Have run chkdsk c: /r from recovery console mode but
still unable to run chkdsk from properties, tools,
checkdisk, restart without above error and failure to
run. Powerquest indicates that the volume was dismounted
improperly. However, unable to mount the drive. While
windows will start and operate, I have been observing
many heretofore unusual failures or crashes. Any
solutions. thanks

Home and Pro the same. The problem has been associated with installing
Zone Alarm 5 - if you have done that, uninstall it back to 4.5 until
they have worked out the cause
