Erasure of Incoming Messages

My incoming messages will remain in the Inbox only as long as I am in that
folder. If I siwtch to any other folder, like Save or Trash or Sent Items,
and then go back to the Inbox, all the messages in the Inbox will have
disappeared! And I cannot find them anywhere, not even in the Trash folder.

What version of Outlook? What type of account? What view? Any filters?
Any rules? You sure don't supply much information someone can use to
diagnose.
