Is it onboard audio or a separate sound card? If onboard audio, what is
the motherboard maker and model? How about the chipset maker? The web
sites for the motherboard maker or chipset maker don't offer their own
equalizer utility? If you have a sound card, it didn't come with an
equalizer utility and there isn't one included in the download on the
sound card maker's web site?

Found nothing you want at the major download sites, like
http://www.download.com/, http://www.tucows.com/, or others? A Google
search didn't find any that you like
(http://www.google.com/search?q=+"Windows+XP"+%2Bequalizer)?

Your speakers (never identified) don't provide some equalization, like
bass, mid, and high? If not then I wonder if they are of decent quality
to effect much difference when using a software equalizer.

Hi,

They are generally part of the media player that you are using. Whether or
not their output is supported is largely dependent on your sound card.
Sometimes, installing a full set of sound card drivers from the manufacturer
gives you these options, as the basic set that is installed by WinXP does
not.

Hi,
I seem to have:
Via AC' 97 Audio Controller (WDM)
Whatever that is.
It must have come with Win XP HE.
The problem is that I subscribe to an online music service and it does not
provide any equalizing feature. It plays through its own browser--so I
cannot use equalization available in standard media players.
Need s'thing native to WIN XP, etc.

Forgot to say that speakers are good--logitech sound system--2 tweaters and
one subwoofer.
Maybe I didn't install the driver for it???

Logitech X220-
There is no dirver for this--you just plg it in--I got mixed up there for a
minute.
Not sure what kind of sound card I actually have.....

Sounds like your motherboard uses the VIA chipset. However, you never
mentioned the actual motherboard (or the brand and model of your
computer). Have you called whomever makes your computer to find out
where is their web site to get downloads for drivers and utilities? For
example, if it is an Dell then you go to Dell's site (because you may
never be sure what exact motherboard they decided to use the week they
slapped together your unit). If you know the motherboard was made by
Asus then you go to their web site. You might find something at
http://www.viaarena.com/ but you would be working at the chipset level
so you would need to know what chipset you actually have. If the
utilities don't tell you, and you can't figure it out by looking inside,
then talk to whomever sold you the computer to find out what is inside.

To get better (and correct) info on your system, you could run
msinfo32.exe. However, Belarc Advisor (free) would probably be easier
to understand. Everest Home is a utility to report all sorts of stuff
about your system but is a crippled version of Aida32 (which included
reporting the software license keys) but you might be hard pressed to
find a download for Aida32 anymore.

Plays through a different "browser"? That's not just another instance
of IE? If so, it is likely that it plays using Windows Media Player as
the client-server to render the music data stream, so go into Windows
Media Player to see if adjusting its equalizer causes whatever effect
you want.

Browser is not another instance of IE, I believe.
Already tried to use setting in Media Player and no joy.
Don;t know Motherboard but I can find out--Let me do that and post again.
I have run msinfo and that is where I got the Via name.
Let me whck on Sony's website for drivers, etc.

If it is not another instance of IE playing the music (by using Windows
Media Player) then maybe it is a Java applet or a downloaded
application. It probably won't matter what you do with a system-level
equalizer as the application will probably used it own settings. You
would need to see if that Java applet or client program running locally
on your computer provides any settings. You could try to right-click on
the "browser" window to see if it has any properties you can alter.

So where at Sony did you visit? What IS your computer? I won't find
anything, either, since I don't have ANY info to direct a search at
http://ciscdb.sel.sony.com/perl/select-p-n.pl.

You sure the driver download only has the driver and isn't a bundle with
other utilities includes? Did your computer come with some CDs where
you might find some extras to install?
