I installed my Epson Printer using the driver in Windows
XP and now when I print, there are characters listed on
the page. I can't get my printer to print out any
documents. Can someone assist me with this.

As you start up your computer the next time, enter the BIOS setup routine.
That is usually done by pressing the Delete key at the appropriate point.
Navigate to the setting for the parallel port the printer uses (usually
LPT1). Change the setting to something line SPP or bi-directional parallel
port but _not_ ECP or EPP or ECP and EPP. Save the settings and Exit. Let
the computer restart.

As windows starts it should adjust printer port support. Try printing.

Let us know.

thanks for both of your help. Since I upgraded to
Windows XP, when my machine boots I'm not able to get tot
he BIOS. Can you assist me with this?
also I did reinstall the drivers following the
instructions and that didn't work. I also bought another
cable and that hasn't worked either.

Hi Cari,
Thank you very much for your help. I did get into the
BIOS setup by pressing the F1 key and the parallel was
already set at bi-directional. I also tried to print
using my old printer which is the Epson Action Printer
5000 and I still got only characters on my page. I can't
think of anything else to do. Can you think of anything
else that may help me.

Try setting it to EPP.

The 740 comes with two types of connectors, a parallel (D-
SUB 25 pin/36 -Pin Centronics) and a USB connector. If you
have a USB slot on your computer this is the way to go.
Its hands free! - As soon as your machine turns on hold
the delete key down. The OS (WinXP, in your case) doesn't
kick in until after the Bios does it's thing.
