'I am running a desktop with ME wirelessly connected to a laptop running XP
Pro. After this weeks auto upate of both systems by Microsoft, I cannot
access the laptop from the ME desktop. I have never used a network password
but the prompt says
"Enter Network Password"
Resource: \\laptop\c on laptop
"You must supply a password to make this connection"

Any idea how to circumvent this when there was no old password to change and
re-establish connection with the laptop which can be seen under My Network??
Many thanks

Is simple file sharing enabled or disabled on the laptop? To see,
look at the end of the list of advanced settings in My Computer |
Tools | Folder Options | View.

If simple file sharing is disabled, make sure that the Guest account
is enabled for network access and that it doesn't have a password:

1. Open a command prompt window.

2. Type the command "net user guest /active:yes".

3. Type the command "control userpasswords2".

4. Click the Guest account, click Reset Password", and click OK
without typing a new password.

If simple file sharing is enabled, create a user account on the laptop
with the same user name and password that you use to log onto the
desktop.

Steve, thanks for the speedy reply on a Sunday.
However when I paste the character string before the @ sign into MS search
utility under All or Technical Resources, it can't find the article.
Am I accessing it correctly?
Thanks

Sorry I'm such a newbie at this Discussion Group thing but pretty good with
PCs.
The number I referenced appeared to be a reply from you as below referring
to an article in the knowledege base.
I have simple sharing enabled on the laptop and will do as you suggest and
check when I get up and boot up tomorrow.
Will let you know. Thanks a bunch.

You're welcome, Garry. I don't see anything in my messages or your
messages that refers to a KB article.

Hi Steve,

Simple file sharing is enabled. I added the new user name with no password
as it is on the desktop (assuming the user name is the same as the
registration name and the one listed on the logoff button under Start) but I
am still getting the same prompt message. Do I have to enable somethin under
the new user? Plus when I let the laptop idle now instead of a screen saver I
get a new blue screen showing the users and I have to select my old name to
reenter the program I was in.

On the desktop, using windows explorer I get a different resource in the
Enter Network Password box depeding on what I highlight under Entire
Network/network name/laptop - the Resource is "\\Laptop\IPC$".
When I highlight the separate entry below the two computers "C on Laptop on
laptop" the resource listed in the box is "\\LAPTOP\C ON LAPTOP".

Thank you

Garry

Hi, Garry. I'm sorry, but I made a mistake in a previous reply:
reversing the procedures for simple file sharing being enabled or
disabled. I'll get it right this time. You can remove the new user
name that you created.

Since simple file sharing is enabled, make sure that the Guest account
is enabled for network access on the laptop and that it doesn't have a
password:

1. Open a command prompt window.

2. Type the command "net user guest /active:yes".

3. Type the command "control userpasswords2".

4. Click the Guest account, click Reset Password", and click OK
without typing a new password.

Steve, sorry for the long absence - I have been sidelined with serious
medical problems and am now trying to get my network working as the
previously identified problem persists.

Here is a synopsis:
Network of laptop and desktop is joined by wireless D-Link router.
Desktop is running ME, laptop is using XP pro.
After a fall update from Microsoft, desktop cannot access laptop through My
Network Places under Explorer. A Network password was not previously required.
Message is "Enter Network Password to make this connection. Resource:
\\LAPTOP\IPC$".
Guest account on laptop is enabled for network access .
Guest account now has a password and is set for autologon.
Guest password is not recognized when entered in desktop as requested.
Laptop Windows firewall is ON with exceptions.
C drive on desktop is recognized as a Netwrok Drive by laptop and
files/folders can be accessed through Windows Explorer on laptop but I cannot
go the other direction.

Many thanks

Garry
