Theresa

I just got a new Dell computer - running Windows XP and
Microsoft Outlook 2003 (yes, Outlook - not OE). I have 3
user profiles set up on Windows - one for each member of
my family. Thus I set up 3 email accounts - each one with
its own email profile using our ISP: ameritech.net. I am
using a DSL connection. My own email account works fine -
it connects and sends and receives.
However - for the other 2 email accounts, no matter how I
configure them I cannot get it to send/receive - I get a
dialogue box that prompts for a network ID and password.
I have no network set up, and there is no password or lack
thereof that it will seem to accept. So neither of the
other 2 Outlook accounts set up on this computer will send
or recieve becasue they are blocked by this inane message.
I have found that people are having similar but not
identical problems (see
http://www.newmediamusings.com/blog/2003/02/outlooks_demand
..html,
and Microsoft's own
http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/preview.aspx?
AssetID=HA011142741033&CTT=4&Origin=CH010422611033
and http://support.microsoft.com/?id=290684

These describe more of a situation where a password is not
retained and/or there really are duplicate accouts set up
on one machine - however my problem is that there never
was a password, I am NOT on a network, and the accouts
are not duplicates.
I have contacted Ameritech and they had me delete and add
the email acccounts (which I had already done before I
even called them - duh) and then they told me the
problem was with Outlook and that only Microsoft could
help. I don't see anything posted about this - anyone
know what to do?
Thanks

Hey Theresa, I had the same problems and ended up going back to SP2! I could
never find a straight forward answer to this problem. I chalked it up to
another Bill Gates special! I too went through the entire process of
deleting and defining email accounts. I wasn't getting dialog box, but no
matter what I did, I could still NOT issue a send/receive from my user
accounts. I am blaming the SP3 fix which probably fixed some problems but
introduced this new problem. I am not inclined to wait for another excuse
from MS. Good luck . . . . . .

Thanks Tom - I see a similar post of this problem
from "Lawlady" at 11:17 this morning, only she is on a
LAN. So the info I am getting makes me think you are
right - there is no fix for this the way it is.
How does one go back to SP2? If I go and download and
install it, will it install "over" SP3? COuld that cause
me problems in other applications do you think? I am
learning more about this than I ever wanted to know, so
any help would be appreciated.
Thanks -
Theresa

For a pop account, try this. Sometimes the registry key that stores the passwords gets corrupted. Make sure Outlook and all other programs are closed, then go to the following reg key:

HKCU\software\microsoft\protected storage system provide

Delete all subkeys underneath that have long SID like numbers similar to S-1-5-21-1202660629-....

Open outlook and you will need to re-input your passwords once. That should solve it.
