I have installed a new version of XP Pro on my computer since the last
version crashed (I'm just trying to get windows to start so I can recover
some important documents - then i'll format and reinstall). WHen I boot the
computer, it goes straight to a black screen with the text "Enter CURRENT
Password" in the center of the screen. I have no idea what password it is
looking for, any ideas?

That sounds like a BIOS password.
Never see a Windows XP Boot screen?

just reload you backup copies of these IMPORTANT files...you did make
backups, didn't you...

it goes to the dell screen and then straight to the Enter CURRENT Password
screen... no option is given to boot from CD. let's say i just want to
completely format my drive and reinstall a brand new xp pro... how do i get
the CD to run? also, any ideas on what the password could be, or how to
reset it?

Then that *is* a BIOS password and as Dell has never sent me any computers
with BIOS passwords already in place - I have no idea - usually the end user
puts these in place. The BIOS password could be anything. You may want to
get in touch with Dell about how to reset this password if you did not set
it nor can find out who did. Without it (without resetting it) that machine
is a large chunk of plastic.
