I'm running XP Pro. Frequently when I shut down or reboot, I get the
message "End program - W". Windows is not able to end it - I have to
press the end program button. Occasionally it happens several times
before the computer shuts down. Nothing I can identify as 'W' appears
in my processes. Any help in figuring out what is causing this would
be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you defenses up to date? You might have an infection.

Thanks for the tips. I had seen the post about reinstalling the mouse
& keyboard - that's not it.

Also, my defenses are sturdy and up to date. I have a good firewall,
virus checker, Spyware Blaster, and I run Ad-Aware Plus every week.

Thanks again.

Do a Search for W.* on your machine.

1. Click Start, click Search, click All files and folders, and then click
More advanced options.
2. Click to select the Search system folders and Search hidden files and
folders check boxes.

I only found one on my machine, W.ico. You may find W.exe.

Thanks again, but I had done that. I did it again, still nothing. I've
also tried shutting down processes one by one until only essential
processes remain, but that doesn't work. It's a tough problem, I
guess.

Thanks.

Hi Wes,

I have a program, StartPro, that I use for startups, but I downloaded
StartupList anyway. I just ran it. Very interesting, but I don't have
time to peruse it. We're about to leave for the holiday, and my wife
is on me to start packing.

Thanks A LOT for your help. Whether or not you helped me solve my
computer problem, you definitely improved my spirits!

A very happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
