Julie

I am the administrator on my computer, and certian people
like to nose around in the sites i've been too. I have the
history set to clear in one day, but I'm trying to figure
out how to keep him from looking in my temt. internet
files. Is there a way to keep him from looking at those
files, without deleting my cookies? Or are those even
important?

Julie;
You probably do not wnat or need to use encryption for this type of
privacy.
You need to protect your profile and give others access to a Limited
Account only.

In any case, you need to be using NTFS and not FAT32.
To check:
Open My Computer, Right click the drive, click Properties.
What does it say by "File System"?
To convert to NTFS:

Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.

Follow the appropriate link:
Windows XP Home:

Windows XP Pro:

Password all accounts with Administrator access including the default
Administrator.
Give all other users access only to Limited profiles.
You must tightly control all Administrators because Any Administrator
can do and undo anything any Administrator can do.
Take appropriate precautions to prevent losing the passwords.

You should use an Administrator profile for Administrator work.
Use a Limited profile for all routine work.

Julie, Jupiter is 100% correct, and those are "best
practices" you can use, BUT there are times when putting
something under "lock and key" just raises more suspicion
from the nosey person who shares your computer. 1)
Cookies are not usually important, as the sites you visit
will just stick them back into your system whenever you
visit. 2)To clear temp internet files evey time you close
your browser, open the browser and go to tools/Internet
options, and on the advanced tab scroll to security, and
checkmark "Empty Temp internet files on browser closing".
3)For more control, Go to www.annoyances.com, download
Tweakui, which will give you control over all your
settings in a centralized location. You can erase your
history, temp internet files, and the record of documents
opened, every time you close your browser, plus a lot
more. 4) Save all sensitive personal information, like
favorite URL's, to a folder with some name that nobody
will mess with, like uninstallXP, or MW11245. Tuck that
info away someplace a few levels deep, like Program
files/Internet Explorer/ MUI...anywhere except in a
system folder. If you use Jupiter's administrative
advice, you're double covered...if you need to hide
things by putting them in "plain sight", these are some
ideas. Warning: don't pull this baloney on a business
network...systems administrators are not happy campers
when they feel jerked around.
