Hi.

I have recently set up a home network with two computers and a printer. Both
computers run XP and we are connected to the internet via ADSL.

I tried enabling a firewall on each computer, but when i did this the
computer which isnt directly connected to the printer is no longer able to
print, but when the firewall is disabled it can print again.

Anyone got any tips on how to enable a firewall on my network, without
preventing the second computer from printing?
Thanks
Justin

Hi,

The included firewall is designed for systems connected directly to the
internet, not for systems behind a router or hub. This behavior is by
design. You should not use it for these types of setups, as you will
encounter the exact problem you are having. Use a third-party firewall
instead behind the router.

Start / Settings / Network Connections / Local Area Connection (or
whatever name you've given your LAN connection) / select properites
under the General tab / select the Advanced tab / make sure there's a
check in the internet connection firewall box.

Also if Justin IS using a router, it would pay to check its documentation,
as quite a few popular ones such as Netgear & Belkin already have a built-in
firewall.
In that case the XP one must be disabled, otherwise it will cause all sorts
of problems.
