Emptying deleted items

Outlook 2003

Is it possible for a user to automatically delete items in the deleted
items folder? I know it can be done through Exchange policies but can the
client do it - for example change a registry setting etc? I don't need it
to empty when they exit, I need it to automatically delete as soon as an
item is deleted.

Thanks.

You could set up Outlook so that items do not even to the deleted items
folder but are hard-deleted, I believe - but I have to ask: why would you
want to do this?
Don't you yourself sometimes realize before the end of the day that you've
deleted something you need back? I've had this happen to me, many times.
I usually just set OL to empty the deleted items folder on exit (and you
might even untick the option that asks the user to accept/decline that).
Or look into mailbox management policies as you mentioned, if you want to
control this more centrally.

The reason for it is that this user is on a Blackberry Enterprise server and
wants their mail deleted in Outlook but not from the handheld. Blackberry
scans the Oultlook deleted items folder for items to delete on teh handheld.
How can I hard- delete?
"Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]"

My Outlook has crashed right now so I can't look up global settings, but
Shift + Delete bypasses the Deleted Items folder and simply deletes. It's an
idea if you can't find a better solution in Options.

My current issue is totally off this subject but one of my BIG problems is
that I am unable to start a new thread in this Community -- only reply to one
-- thus, I am having to tag onto another post... sorry.
I want my message boxes to be arranged in such an order as to be set out by:
DATE -- TODAY; DATE -- YESTERDAY; DATE -- TUESDAY; DATE -- LAST WEEK, etc.
It has nothing to do with clicking the "received" sorting. I have two
profiles and one has the order arranged correctly and I am just baffled as to
why I can't get my other profile date order to be the same. Any help would
be appreciated. Again, sorry for tagging onto this posting.

Hello Bad,

Thank you for posting here!

According to your description, I understand that you want to automatically
empty the Deleted Items Folder in Outlook 2003. If I have misunderstood
your concern, please let me know.

Firstly, I agree with Jane that you can hard delete the item by pressing
Shift + Delete key to accomplish your goal. However, it maybe troublesome
if you want to recover any items that have been hard deleted. For your
reference, you can refer to the following Knowledge Base article to recover
items that have been "hard deleted":

246153 How to recover items that have been hard deleted in Outlook
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;246153

In the meantime, you can use the AutoArchive feature to delete or archive
the items in the Deleted Items Folder on schedule. To do it, follow the
steps below:

1. In the Folder List, right-click the Deleted Items Folder, and then click
Properties.
2. Click the AutoArchive tab.
3. To set the AutoArchive properties for this folder, click to select
"Archive this folder using these settings" and then select "Clean out items
older than".
4. To specify when the items must be automatically transferred to your
archive file, type a number in the Months box.
5. If you want to permanently delete the items, click to select
"permanently delete old items".
6. Click OK.

For more detailed information about the AutoArchive feature, please refer
to the following Knowledge Base article:

830119 Description of the AutoArchive feature in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;830119

Please don't hesitate to let me know in case you have any further concerns.
Have a nice day!

Hello customer,

It is nice to meet you here.

To avoid any confusion during the troubleshooting process, we suggest
focusing one question in one post here. Therefore, as to the current
status, you can firstly perform the steps below to setup Newsgroup in the
Outlook Express.

(1) To start, double-click the Outlook Express icon.
(2) In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click on Accounts.
(3) In the Internet Account dialog box, click the Add button and click
News.
(4) In the Internet Connection Wizard, for the Display name, type your name
and click Next.
(5) For the E-mail address, type your email name and click Next. Note: In
the Microsoft Public Newsgroup, you can directly use your own email address
and do not need the specific account as in the Private Newsgroup.
(6) To specify the News (NNTP) Server, type msnews.microsoft.com if you
want to access Microsoft Public Newsgroup.
(7) Click Next, click Finish, and then click Close.
(8) When you are prompted with the following message, click Yes: "Would you
like to download newsgroups from the news account you added?" Note: If you
want to download newsgroups from the news account later, click No.
(9) In the list of newsgroups, click to select the
microsoft.public.outlook.general newsgroup, click Subscribe, and then click
OK. This adds the specific newsgroup to the Outlook Express Name pane.
(10) Double-click the name of a newsgroup to open it and view its entries.

sorry.

Hi - you might want to consider using a newsreader like Outlook Express or
Forte Agent rather than the web interface to the newsgroups - it's a lot
easier to do nearly everything there, including searching, which is always a
good idea to do before you post, as well as mark messages to be watched, and
filter based on replies to your posts.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like.

For tips on using the web interface, should you prefer to use it, see

If you're using the web interface, just under the "Discussions in Outlook
General Questions" title and the "Search" box that's below that title,
you'll see a header bar containing "New", "Reply", "Show". Click "New" and
select "Question" or "General comment" as appropriate.

Dear Brian--
The reason I "tagged on" to this posting is because I am PHYSICALLY unable
to start a NEW thread as I stated in my "tag-on" post. Thus, that is why I
REPLIED to this posting. Yes, of course, I see "New," "Reply," & "Show."
However, when I click "New" -- nothing happens -- no NEW window opens up to
begin a NEW post. I will look into the other methods suggested.

Dear Martin--
I am using Outlook and there is no "Accounts" selection under "Tools." What
now?

I went to the "tips on using the web interface" since I don't seem to be able
to use Outlook as a newsreader and it did not give me any more info than I
already know or have tried to use. My problem is: that I CANNOT post a new
message in this forum and I am trying to find out WHY. When I click on "new"
-- nothing happens -- no new popup window appears for me to start a new
thread. That is my problem.

Sorry, I don't know how to use the web interface, because I don't bother
with it.

I mentioned Outlook *Express*, though, not *Outlook*. The latter is not a
news client. OE is.

This isn't a forum - it's a newsgroup (aka usenet group), and it's much
better to access it using a news *client*.

What version of Outlook? For Outlook 98/2000 IMO, there will be. For
Outlook 97 and 98/2000 CW, there should be a "Services" item under Tools.
For Outlook 2002/2003, it's Tools>E-mail Accounts.

Use Outlook Express, Forte Agent, or some other newsreader for better
control over the newsgroup.

Okay... not "Me" physically -- but my "Computer" physically. :)
So..., if I don't use Outlook Express and my computer won't physically begin
a new posting -- any other options?

Good. Whew. Although, I'd be more inclined to say "electronically"...

I don't know how to help you with the web interface - what's the reason you
don't just use OE anyway? It's certainly installed by default on your
computer.
