Empty deleted mail on exit

Ever since I installed Outlook 2002 and now with Outlook 2003 the deleted
folder will no longer delete on exit. I have gone into the account options
and re-checked this, applied, OKed and everything but it still will not
delete.
Should I expect this to work?

Sure. Something probably got damaged. Are you working with a pst-file or
against an Exchange server?

all of the accounts are msn mail accounts that I am accessing through Outlook.

Ah, then it doesn't work indeed. It only works on the default folderset.
Note that Hotmail clears the Deleted Items folder each day.
