I used to get a smiley face when i typed :-) now I get a symbol that looks
like a cursive Capital I. How can I get the smiley faces back?

Outlook doesn't contain emoticons. You could have had an add-in that created
them. There are also some face symbols in some of the Windows fonts and you
can add those into AutoCorrect to add them. The AutoCorrect feature is in
different places in different versions of Outlook. For Outlook 2003, when
using the Outlook editor for composing, click
Tools>Options>Spelling>AutoCorrect options and there you can add ☺ as a
substitution for the three characters ;-). It's in the Arial (and other) font
at position U+263A.

I used to get the smiley's automatically and then it changed to the cursive
"I" looking thing. I never chaneged anything. Any idea how to get them back
with out having to go into autocorrect to do it? An why it may have changed?

Outlook does not contain ANY smileys. Period. If you used to have them, then
you installed some add-in to give them to you. Reinstall that add-in.
Computers don't change "all of a sudden". If the behavior changed, then you
did something (albeit inadvertent) to change it.

Actually, Brian, doesn't the Word stub that OL uses contain the graphical
emoticons?

Jeff, if I could hazard a guess, I'd bet you recently changed the default
font that is used to compose messages. OL is going to try to convert :) to
the graphical representation, but if the font set doesn't have the graphical
representation, it'll pick whatever character is in that spot.

(Technically, I should have said the code that changes the text to the character
was in the Word stub)

As I explained, those would be in AutoCorrect. Jeff says he doesn't want to
use AutoCorrect.

I think you're probably correct about the font change.
