Emergency (?) cannot compact DB file

Using Access XP.
Every Monday morning I comapact/repair the Master BE file, this morning is
the first time in four years that I have seen the message: "Unrecognized
databse format 'MyFileName.mdb'". I tried to delete the
[TempMsysAccessObjects] table and I got the same error. When I tried to
compact/repaoir my daily back up I had the same error. Any hints of what the
problem is? What can I do to compact my B/E? I had opened the file in [Open
exclusive]
