is it possible to embed the file names of attachments so that they are
referenced with the email after the attachment is removed?

i need to remove attached files from saved emails due to mailbox quota, but
i want the name of the attached files to stay with the email for future
reference. currently all record of the attachment is removed after the file
is separated form teh email?????

My opionion is that you'd be better off createing a local PST and keeping
the messages with their attachments intact in the local PST.

can't do that because they need to be left on the network for backup and
archival with all other emails. i'm using an imap server.

But you said you want to remove the attachments from the server, so how do
you intend to get them backed up and how is keeping them in a local PST
(that you periodically copy to a network share for backup) any different?

the attachments are saved on a file server, the emails must be stored on the
email server together with the rest of the office. i jsut need to leave a
record of what attachments were transmitted with the email after they are
removed. our mac users have this automatically done with Entourage - the mac
version of Outlook. The file name of the attachment(s) are listed with the
email even after the attachments are removed. but i can't find any options
to set this to happen in Outlook.
