Hi, i'm doing this for mum mum because she has got a new windows mail account
but using her old google mail address (i'm not sure how, the man next door
set it up for her..!). Emails will come through, but every time she tries to
send one it comes up with a big box saying "some errors occured while
processing the requested task" and underneath in the details section it says
this:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject '?', Account: 'pop.gmail.com',
Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 Please check
that your outgoing mail server settings are correct. Contact your service
provider's technical support for assistance.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC6F

Please can anyone tell me, what does it mean and how can i sort it out for
her?!

Go to tools>accounts>select account>properties>advanced tab, change outgoing
port to 465 from 25>apply/OK
Get back if that does not fix it for her?

Mac,

I had a similar problem using charter email so I changed the port to 465 but
got the same results.

Ron

here is the message I still get:
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test 1', Account: 'Windows
Mail', Server: 'smtp.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL):
No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Did you check the box "My server requires authentication"?

thanks for the reply. Yes I have gone through this document and tried what
was stated. In talking to charter folk, they tell me mail.charter.net is for
webmail and need to use pop.charter.net for receiving and smtp.charter.net
for outgoing. I have not had any success using either scenario.

Windows mail worked when it was orignally set up, somehow incredimail took
over and after removing incredimail I cannot get windows mail to work again.

Some instructions for how to set up to use email servers assume that
they don't need to mention anything where the default setting for
something is already the correct setting. You may want to try
removing your email account under Windows Mail, then using
restarting Windows Mail and using those instructions to add it again.

Also, if you have any messages in your outbox, try to move them to
the Drafts Folder or delete them. If you have any that refuse to do
either, download and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not
running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first.
Certain common antivirus programs, such as most of those from
Norton or McAfee, tend to cause stuck messages and various
other problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately,
so if you have such a program, remember where to find the hotfix, and
hope it will install again if you need it again.

Also, if you have the Google Toolbar program installed, uninstall
it, since it causes problems in Windows Mail.

If this doesn't help, what if any antivirus programs and antispyware
programs do you have?

I found I had to go to tools and go through the exercise with advanced etc
and the 465 each time I sent an e-mail.

Do you click on Apply after making the change but before clicking OK
to leave the Advanced page? If so, you may have a problem with one
of your security programs blocking Windows Mail from recording the
change.

What if any antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and other security software
do you have?

After reading thru these posts, I'm wondering if you have Spam enabled on
your Virus Program.. If so DisAble it..

If that still does not work..

Then go to your ISP Web Site and read very carefully each step that they
require you to do in setting up your mail.

On my ISP (which just changed over to a new setting) I had to

1) Logon to the Web Page to Enable the POP3 and SMTP there first on the Web
Site
2) Take the POP3 and SMTP info from the Web site and add to my WinMail (OE)
3) Port# had to be changed also..

In setting up you need to make sure your Virus Program has not added
anything to the Mail System..

I disabled my Spam on TrendMicro because it caused minor problems..

My ISP catches 99% spam anyway, so I really do not need it now.. Yours may
do the same..

Charter's outgoing mail server does not work on port 465.
Use only ports specified by the server's owner.

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
Kaspersky
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.
