emails dont appear

When I "send and receive" I frequently see messages being downloaded (in the
status bar at the bottom of the screen) But some, or all, of these messages
do not appear in my inbox.

Any ideas anyone?

No, I have no rules setup at this time.
("Tools>rules & Alerts" shows no rules)
