I have tried to send about 10 important messages and they are not going out.
Checked the "sent mail" box and they don't show. I turned off the computer,
disconnected the modum, waited all afternoon, restarted, left the modum
disconnected for about 5 min. and then connected the modum. A message said I
have messages in the outbox, should they be sent. I checked yes, but they do
not show on the sent mail box. What now??

Messages stuck in the outbox can be removed by this utility...
(try to copy them to the draft folder first so you don't lose them.)
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx
providing the program operation instructions are followed.

Why they got stuck in the first place is another issue.
It may be the consequence of running an WM incompatible antivirus
program suite such as Norton or McAfee. If you are running either of those
you are likely to run into problems at some point and it would be safest
to uninstall them and use a compatible program such as AVG or Avast.
(exclude or disable the superfluous email scanning)
You may need to delete and recreate your email account within WM.

This worked for me.
Go to Tools, then Accounts.
I deleted the POP3. My default server is now pop.charter.net.
I have Charter Cable. Ask your Internet provider what their incoming server
name is.
