Zoe

Hi!

I'm new to all this.... hope this is the right group & somebody can help!

I'm running XP Home edition.

I've got nine incoming messages, the fourth must be a very big one, 'cos it
never manages to complete downloading it. I get a pop up window with the
title System Shutdown, the message underneath reads - This system is
shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved
work will be lost. This system shutdown was initiated by NTAuthority\system.

Underneath that is a countdown clock to shutdown. Underneath the clock is
another message, entitled message and reads - Windows must now restart
because the Remote Procedure and Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly.
What all that means I have no idea - I hope you do.

Thank you

Zoe

Should Zoe cleanup the Blaster virus before trying to telnet?

Ron Sommer

Type telnet in help and in a command prompt and
eg:

dele 4
quit

List 4 will give you some details on it incl size.
Retr 4 will try to show it in the telnet window.

To play with telnet and mail
Start it and connect to your mail server (mail.myisp.com) and port 110
and type (send yourself a mail first - or it's a boring example)

user <your email user name> eg user fred
pass <your email password> eg pass password
stat
list (with optional message ID eg list 1)
retr 1
quit

DELE 1 would delete the message with ID 1
RSET undeletes messages (messages marked with DELE are deleted when the quit
command is given Rset unmarks messahges for deletion)
NOOP Does nothing

And that is POP3 basic, and the full command set (there are optional ones).
So toss out OE and get going with telneting to your mail server.

Yes, person perpetually from yesterday, my time was correct. Both yours show -6:00

My time hasn't changed. The late news just came on the tele which is what one would expect.

Are you +10 from GMT?
I show your reply being recieved 50 minutes before I asked the question.
