I'm trying to remotely troubleshoot this problem on a machine I set up
for my Mother-in-law.
She has a new machine, with the latest XP components. Including Outlook
express and IE 6 SP1. Everything was working fine, then one day IE lost
it's link to OE. When you click on an email link in IE, it does not
launch OE.
If you go to the IE internet options, and go to the program tab, there
are no programs listed for email.
Tech support for her ISP suggested re-installing IE 6. We tried that,
it went very quickly and made no difference. Then we followed the
directions for uninstalling SP1, and re-installing. It said it couldn't
install SP1 because a later version was present. Then we got rid of the
IE windows component, and tried again. Same message. It refused to
install. So we re-installed the windows IE component, and tried again.
Same message. Finally (in desperation) I had her go to through the
"Windows Update" process, and have that load SP1. That seemed to work.
However our original problem stayed.
Has anyone run into this, or have a solution around the "no email
program" problem in IE 6?
