Email problems

We used to work with Windows XP. When we would receive an message that
locked up our email, we could go into the correct user name and delete the
..dbx file for the inbox, which does wipe out all email but also corrects the
problem. We are now working in Vista and can not find that same solution.
Was wondering if anyone know how to do that on Vista or has another solution.

Windows Mail does not have the equivalent of a .dbx file.
Windows Mail is mostly trouble-free unless you use it with non-compatible
third party security products (antivirus, anti-spyware, etc.).
What is the exact problem you are having with Windows Mail?

We evidently received an email with a bad file but can't exactly pinpoint it.
When we go to download an attachment from any email, the email screen goes
white, says there is an error and either shuts down all together or reboots.
We have had that happen with XP and deleting the .dbx file always took care
of it. We download files all day long but this happens only a couple times a
year. We have around 10 different emails in the company and it is only
happeing on the 2 accounts that download files sent in from our customers.
(our security program is Norton) Thanks

Norton and WinMail are not very compatible. I would recommend getting
something less invasive. See point 3 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

If you can pinpoint which messages are causing the error, then you can
disable the Preview Pane (View | Layout) and then select the messages and do
a Shift-Delete on them to get rid of them completely. This also works for
OE and you needn't delete the entire inbox.

I would also like to have access to the database of emails file, as did
repro, below.

I have horrendous database problems with Windows Mail. Most of my deleted
emails remain in the deleted folder as I cannot clean out this folder due to
the number of errors in the database.

Most of my deleted emails now exhibit the following error message in the
message body (the header remains readable)

"Message could not be displayed
Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again."

I have scads of memory available (>1gb) and about 30gb free of hard drive,
which should be more than enough.

I exported out all my good messages, then went hinting for the database to
delete it - and it's invisible.

And of course, now WMail doesnt seem able to see my exported emails to
import them back in ...

So, any suggestions gratefully received on how to clear out these damaged
emails from my deleted file...

Thanks
Andrew

thanks gary - unfortunately, I am assuming that my comoany has locked out
downloading of Windows Live email as when I try to download, it just goes
through its validation process for about 8 hours (not kidding) before i get
bored and cancel the download. Maybe there's a smart way to download the
Windows Live email client?

cheers
