email notification on welcome screen

two users on the computer.
both accounts say there is new email to check.
if you click on it, they both tell you that the new mail is tied to the
other user's email address.
I have not found any way to disassociate his email from my icon on the
welcome screen and reassociate my own.
Once I go into my account, everything seems tied to mine, but not the
welcome screen.
I'd like for this to work, if possible (as opposed to disabling notfication
entirely).
Thanks for any help you can give!
