Kimberly

I downloaded my new emails from my ISP, then my PC froze. I then
rebooted and every email in by inbox after the date of 10/21/03 is now
gone.
Any ideas on how/if I can recover them???

Also, now I try to use Norton Disk Doctor (Norton SystemWork 2003) and
I keep getting error messages.

If I disable the fix button, it finds problems with the Security
Descriptors but will not fix them.

When I select the "fix" button, it starts the scan but then tells me
"The operating system, or another process, currently has exclusive
access to this drive, or some of it's file.
Norton DiskDoctor cannot continue with a repair under these
conditions.
A repair can be scheduled etc, etc.

I did the reboot and a CHKDSK scan and the same problem is always
there.

Any thoughts or ideas are very much appreciated!!!
Thanks,
K

While I am a fan of Norton Anti-virus I find the Symantec utilities garbage. The disk doctor and disk optimizer do more damage than good. There are tools within XP that do the job much better as they are designed for the OS. chkdsk for instance will scan your HDD and find and fix any errors if you run chkdsk with the r parameter. For instance go>start\run and type in cmd and click ok. now type in chkdsk /r being sure to put the space after chkdsk and then hit ok. Follow any on screen prompts. It may need to do this at next boot so it has complete access to all your info. The check usually takes 10-15 minutes. Also the defrag in XP does a much better job than the Symantec one. In short throw out everything but your Norton Anti-virus and post back here if you need help finding and using XP tools. There are around 100 hidden tools and utilities in XP. Another example is go>start\run and type in dxdiag and hit ok. Then click your way around the various tabs to see everything that you can trouble shoot in here. Good luck.
