Email address problem

Outlook won't accept new email addresses in either the "To:" field or as a
new Contact . I get an error message saying "Outlook does not recognize one
or more names"
However, it will accept email addresses when I reply to read messages.
I have Outlook 2000 SR-1 9.0.0.3821

I type, e.g., "(e-mail address removed)" in the To: field. When I click "Send" I get the error message I indicated above.
In Tools / Services / Servers, should I click the box for "My server
requires authentication"?
